2004-2005 HEINEKEN SUSTAINABILITY REPORT
As part of its commitment to conducting business in a responsible
manner, Heineken has published its 2004-2005 Sustainability Report.
Produced annually, the report contains information regarding Heineken's
sustainable development, discusses results from stakeholder consultation,
outlines progress on key international programmes, as well as detailing
future targets, commitments and programmes in the works.
Sietze Montijn, Head of Corporate Affairs at Heineken, explains: "This
report presents the results that have been achieved across our entire
organisation in the areas of, amongst others, environment, health and
safety, alcohol policy, business conduct and supply chain responsibility.
The report also outlines our priorities regarding potential improvements
in the time to come."
The 2004-2005 Sustainability Report focuses on the five key roles in which
Heineken functions: as a publicly listed company, as a brewer of high-
quality beers, as a marketer, as an employer and as an integral part of
societies around the world. The report examines the company's
sustainability performance in relation to each of these important roles.
Mark van Rijn, Manager Company and Society at Heineken, observes: "The
Heineken Sustainability Report is a key resource for all sustainability and
non-financial data for internal and external stakeholders. All the
improvements in our reporting ultimately serve a single goal: to give all
stakeholders the information they need to challenge, question, support or
partner with us."
New to this year's report is a section rating the company's performance
against the targets and commitments set in the previous sustainability
report. This section examines a wide range of promises made by
Heineken, such as commitment to wastewater reduction, improvements in
recycling and the implementation and publication of Heineken's Code of
Business Conduct. These issues, and many more, are rated according to
the company's success in keeping its promises.
Heineken has received recognition for its sustainability performance. The
company has maintained its listing in the FTSE4Good Index (which
measures the performance of companies that meet globally recognised
corporate responsibility standards) and in 2005, was included in the Dow
Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI)in both the STOXX and the World
Index. This means that, according to the annual benchmark survey carried
out by Sustainable Asset Management in Zurich, whose research is at the
basis of the DJSI, Heineken is a sustainability leader in its sector.
Heineken's sustainability targets and commitments for the near future are
also a major focus of this latest report. Continued improvement of
recycling by-products, the further reduction of carbon dioxide emissions
and the extension of the Selling Beer Safely programme are just a few of
the targets set by the company. "Heineken has achieved a lot over the
past two years," says Heineken CEO Jean-Franpois van Boxmeer. "Looking
forward, in 2006 we will continue to work on our sustainability priorities:
environmental care, business conduct, alcohol policy and supply chain
responsibilities. Given the growing demand for non-financial information
from our stakeholders, we have decided to produce a full sustainability
report every year from now on, helping us to create a more flexible
corporate responsibility agenda and to meet stakeholders' demands in
good time and greater detail."
The 2004-2005 Sustainability Report is accessible on the company website
(www.heinekeninternational.com) and is also available in print.
