1999-2001, Heineken reduced water consumption by 14%.
In regional workshops engineers were encouraged to draw up
their own water saving plan while learning from the experiences
of other locations. The success of the Aware of Water programme
has led to the decision to start the Aware of Energy programme.
The energy consumption of the production locations is reported
every month in the Heineken Brewery Comparison System (BCS).
The production manager can follow-up the performance and
trends of his own brewery and compare his energy consumption
with other breweries.
Heineken is continuously working on the implementation of
new technology to reduce energy consumption. At present the
R&D department is working on developing new technology such
as continuous brewing processes and a brewers spent grain project
where the proteins are separated from the fibres. The proteins
will be used as feed for animals, while the fibres will be used as
biomass for boilers.
Heineken will also look at other alternatives for renewable energy
such as solar, wind energy, biogas and biomass. With all these
activities Heineken will contribute to the fulfilment of the Kyoto
Agreement and the Bonn Protocol.
