Mouterij Albert in
Ruisbroek, Belgium, will
have expanded to become
one of the world's biggest
malting plants within one
year's time. In April this
year the then Belgian prime
minister Dehaene unveiled
the plaque that marks the
start of expansion work
that is scheduled for com
pletion in May next year.
This will increase the malt
ing plant's capacity by
70,000 tonnes to a total of
230,000 tonnes of malt per
year.

plant's workforce for their efforts in
the area of quality control. The mal
ting plant had already been awarded
ISO 9001 certification in 1994, but
had since then also been honoured
by receiving a major prize from
the Flemish Centre for Quality
Assurance. He praised the manage
ment and employees of the malting
plant: "Their efforts, enthusiasm,
dedication and professional skill
have made the Albert Malting plant
into what it is today: the leading
supplier of the very best malt.'
HISTORY
Mouterij Albert was established in
1954 in Wijnegem alongside the
Albert Canal, after which it was
named. Heineken acquired the mal
ting plant at the end of the 1960s.
The total production in those days
(30,000 tonnes) was used for the
Heineken breweries in Holland. But
the company's strong growth meant
that the demand for malt grew at an
equally fast speed. As the malting
