Adventure on the High Seas as the Whitbread 'Round the World Race for the Heineken Trophy Gets Underway Global Sponsorship for the World's Best Beer It is the ultimate ocean race. Running nine months, 32 thousand nautical miles in often unforgiving seas, it has been called gruelling and exhilarating by those brave enough to raise their sails in competition. Welcome to the Whitbread Round the World Race for the Heineken Trophy. On Saturday, September 25, 16 yachts carrying some 200 sailors left Southampton, England on the first leg of the six-leg '93-'94 race. Twelve countries are represented in this running of the Whitbread, which will stop on our shores next April, in Ft. Lauderdale, at the end of the fifth leg. From Ft. Lauderdale, sailors will race back across the Atlantic to Southampton for the fin ish of the race, expected in early June. As a global sponsor of the event, Heineken's presence will be strongly felt throughout each aspect of the race. In addition to being title sponsor of the trophy awarded after each leg, Heineken will maintain a "Trophy Village" at each of the stopovers around the world. That means that the world's sporting press won't be able to miss our strong involvement in this prestigious race, often referred to as the "Mt. Everest" of yacht racing. In addition to all the newspaper, radio, and television news coverage of the nearly year-long running of the Whitbread Race, ESPN will be featur ing a number of programs throughout the race, highlight ing each leg, as well as the spon sors' activities in the race villages. For Heineken, of course, the presentation of the trophy to the winner of each leg is a focal small, red enamel burgee. This is backed by a crystal disk etched with a map of the world. Both elements rest on an ebony base decorated with the Heineken logo bar. The finished Heineken Trophy, un- point of sponsorship. That's why world-renowned jeweler Tiffany Company was commissioned early this year to design the Heineken Tro- phy. Tiffany, which has a long history of designing prestigious racing awards, has outdone itself with the Heineken Trophy. The design features a billow ing, sterling silver sail topped with a veiled by supermodel Naomi Campbell just prior to the start of the race, certainly lives up to Heineken's world-class stan dards. As the race cruises towards U.S. shores, be sure to watch your local news for updates on the competition, ESPN for overall race coverage, and The Windmill for updates on Heineken's exciting spon sorship activities.
