Africa Sales proceeds were up 11.2% to NLG 515 million. Earnings improved as a result of a recovery in sales. In 1995 the economic situation again worsened in many African countries, as a result of which purchasing power was under pressure. Nevertheless, the sales of our locally produced brands showed an increase. There was also a recovery in sales of imported beer after the unfavourable development in 1994. In Zaire, the beer market grew again for the first time in years and the market share of our operating company Bralima rose considerably. A start was made on local production of Amstel beer. During the year under review our operating company in Rwanda produced beer and soft drinks on a limited scale. The reconstruction of the distribution network was commenced in the course of the year. In Burundi the situation was unstable, which had repercussions on the activities of our operating company Brarudi. As a result of the unfavourable economic situation sales by our minority holding in Nigeria fell considerably. In Ghana, we raised the interest in our affiliate Kumasi Brewery Ltd. to 17.7%. The Company's interest in Brasseries du Logone, in Chad, was increased to 50%.
