The interests of our concern in this field of activity are mainly in South East Asia. The governments of the countries where these interests are located are seriously endeavouring to achieve the political tranquillity which is absolutely essential in order to make optimum use of the economic possibilities at their disposal. The longer-term prospects are accordingly considered to be favourable. Singapore Malaysia Malayan Breweries Ltd. has two breweries in operation in Singapore and one brewery in Kuala Lumpur. In the financial year 1971/1972 the beer turnovers lagged some what behind those of the previous year. This is particularly due to the increase in excise duty and the introduction of a sales tax in Malaysia, where the economy is still highly dependent on rubber and tin. The prices of these commodities were under pressure during the period under review. The economic development of Singapore has again been favourable during the past financial year. There is a high level of employment and the income per capita is relatively high. Australian New Guinea The beer turnover of South Pacific Brewery Ltd., of Port Moresby, a subsidiary of Malayan Breweries Ltd., fell below that of the previous year. This was a consequence of the uncertainty evident in the economic situation. Nevertheless the prospects for the development of beer turnover are not considered to be unfavourable. 20
