- Despite a sharp reduction in the number of tourist visitors, Brasserie Malterie
Almaza S.A.I.., of Beirut, Lebanon, was able to maintain sales at practically
the same level as the previous year.
The sales of the Amstel Gold produced under licence bv Eastern Brewery Ltd.,
of Baghdad, Iraq, have again increased.
FAR EAST
- The course of affairs at the brewery in Surabaya shows a favourable trend. The
improved economic situation of Indonesia gives grounds for optimism.
The withdrawal of the British troops from Malaysia will affect the sales of the
Malayan Breweries Ltd. group. Otherwise the market shows a satisfactory
growth.
The breweries associated with Malayan Breweries Ltd. in Australian New
Guinea and New Zealand achieved record sales.
WEST AFRICA
- The breweries of Nigerian Breweries Ltd. at Lagos and Kaduna are operating
at maximum capacity. The brewery at Aba is still out of operation. The sales of
Heineken beer brewed under licence increased considerably.
- The sales of Kumasi Brewery Ltd. in Ghana have in the meantime once again
reached the limits of the brewery's capacity.
Sierra Leone Brewery Ltd., of Freetown, has similarly operated at full capacity.
The sales of Heineken and Guinness brewed under licence continued to in
crease. In the meantime it has been decided to expand the brewery.
CENTRAL AFRICA
- Brasseries du Logone S.A., of Moundou in the Chad Republic, had another
successful year of development. A substantial programme of investment will
be carried out in order to be able to continue to meet the demand.
The results of the seven breweries belonging to Interbra S.A., of Brussels
(established in Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda and Burundi) are
a source of satisfaction. It was decided to set up a new establishment, namely
at Mbandaka. Construction has been started. The brewery in Angola is doing
well.
SOUTH AFRICA
Despite a rise in the sales of Whitbread South Africa (Pty) Ltd., Johannesburg,
it is still not possible to say that the course of affairs is entirely satisfactory.
During the year under review there was an increase in sales of the Amstel beer
produced under licence in Johannesburg by The South African Breweries Ltd.
