The island of Das is a rock mass in the middle of the Persian Gulf which
figuratively speaking floats on oil. It has been developed from a
mere stony desert into a huge oil depot and distribution centre to
accommodate today's tankers which are too big to enter the ordinary
harbours in the area.
This small but highly industrialised spot in the ocean recently assumed
still further importance as a liquid gas processing and exporting cen
tre. The product reaches Das by pipeline and after being liquefied is
shipped to all parts of the world.
There is a permanent population of three thousand, all male, who are
responsible for installation, maintenance and administration of the oil
and gas flowing to and from the island.
A work force of three thousand left the island recently after building a
number of projects designed to make life tolerable in the burning heat
of this stone mass swept by occasional sandstorms from the mainland.
They built swimming pools, living quarters and artificial gardens, the
latter with the aid of vast quantities of imported black earth. They
constructed an installation to make sea-water drinkable and then built
a huge tavern.
And that is where Heineken and Amstel came in. The company's
brands, tinned and cartoned, are shipped straight from Holland. A
strong asset in the fight against the heat, the beers enhance the ex
cellent meals served in the middle of the ocean. The cooks order most
of their supplies by the shipload, but fresh and frozen foods are flown in
daily from Abu Dhabi, a half-hour's flight away.
There are movies, sailing, scuba diving and on oil soaked sands
instead of traditional greens there is also golf. Not to mention welcome
leave, at regular intervals, in Great Britain.

L'ile de Das est une masse rocheuse au milieu
du Golfe persique qui il s'agit bien sür d'une
métaphore flotte sur du pétrole. Elle est
passée d'un simple désert rocailleux a un im
mense dépot et centre de distribution de pé
trole, permettant de recevoir les pétroliers
d'aujourd'hui qui sont trop grands pour entrer
dans les ports de la région.
Ce point dans I'eau, petit mais hautement in-
dustrialisé, a pris récemment encore plus
d'importance en tant que centre de traitement
et d'exportation de gaz liquide. Le produit ar
rive a Das par pipeline et, après avoir été li-
quéfié, il est expédié dans tous les coins du
monde par bateau. La population permanente
de 1'ile est forte de 3000 habitants, tous des
hommes, qui sont responsables des installa
tions, de I'entretien et de I'administration de
tout ce qui concerne Ie pétrole et le gaz en
trant et sortant de I'Tle.
3000 employés ont récemment quitté I'Tle
après avoir construit un certain nombre d'é-
quipements destinés a rendre la vie plus tolé-
rable dans la chaleur brülante de cette masse
rocailleuse balayée de temps a autres par des
tempêtes de sable soufflant du continent.

stel. Les marques de la société, par cartons

chaleur, ces bières rehaussent les excellents
repas servis en plein milieu de l'océan. Les
vivres commandés par les cuisiniers sont
expédiés par bateau; par contre, des aliments
frais ou surgelés sont livrés quotidiennement
par avion a partir d'Abu Dhabi, a une demi-
heure de vol de la.
II y a un cinéma, on peut y faire de la voile, de
la plongée sous-marine et sur des sables
imbibés de pétrole au lieu des pelouses tra-
ditionnelles il y a aussi un golf. Sans men-
tionner les congés bienvenus, a intervalles
réguliers, en Grande Bretagne.

Mr. Van der Werf presented the mug as an
expression of goodwill and congratulation
from Heineken while visiting Singapore dur
ing a Far East tour, on which he was accom
panied by his colleague Mr. R. van de Vijver,
member of the Heineken Board of Managing
Directors.

M. van der Werf remit la chope en gage de la
satisfaction d'Heineken, lors d'un arrêt a Sin-
gapour au cours de son voyage en Extrême-
Orient; il était accompagné par son collègue
M. R. van de Vijver, membre du directoire
d'Heineken.
