In 1998 the quantity of residual waste increased to 39 thousand tonnes. This increase was primarily due to new acquisitions and project-based maintenance at a number of production units. The other production units achieved a reduction in the amount of industrial residual waste as a result of improved sorting procedures and more effi cient waste management. As a consequence of these measures the overall specific quantity of industrial residual waste produced in 1999 was reduced to 35 thousand tonnes. Industrial residual waste is transported to local waste processing companies for incineration, or goes to landfill. Hazardous waste is comprised of materials that may be detrimental to the environment and to the health of human beings. The defini tion of hazardous waste depends on the relevant local legislation.
