Investment to Combat HIV/AIDS PharmAccess African Studies to Evaluate Resistance (PASER) Bonnes Routes Project King's Hope health of those living in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Foundation has €20 million of capital that can fund projects to the value of€l million per year. HIV/AIDS, which remains a serious social and economic issue, is top of the list of priorities for the Foundation. Fleineken has been providing a FIIV/AIDS prevention and treatment initiative to all its Sub-Saharan Africa employees and their dependents since 2001. Aimed at preventing FIIV, as well as providing health care and support for those affected, the programme provides education, free condoms, voluntary counselling, testing and treatment to tens of thousands of people. The successful scheme has been extended to a number of supply chain companies in Nigeria, following a successful pilot project. A similar project has just been launched for Bralima and their supply chain companies in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fleineken is also committed to sustainable agriculture and aims to source an average of 60% of raw materials locally in Africa by 2020. Fleineken continues to expand local sourcing projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, including sorghum projects in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Burundi, a rice project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, maize in Rwanda, and barley in Egypt. The future for Fleineken in Africa is bright. Tom expects Nigerian consumption to grow from 11 litres to 17 litres per head per year in the coming five to eight years. "This will easily add an extra nine million hectolitres per year to our Nigerian volume. We are also optimistic about beer consumption in central Africa," he says. "Ethiopia, which is Africa's largest country by population after Nigeria, also offers significant growth potential as the average beer consumption per head is only three litres per year." In March this year, Heineken hosted an FIIV/ AIDS symposium in Amsterdam, themed 'Sharing Responsibilities in the "World of Work" in Africa', to discuss the ongoing challenges in the areas of funding, increased resistance of FIIV/AIDS to treatment, and increasing access to medicine. In addition to raising awareness, Fleineken also announced three new projects - PASER, Bonnes Routes and Project King's Flope - to be funded through the Fleineken Africa Foundation. PASER is the largest project in Sub-Saharan Africa that aims to monitor drug resistance in FIIV patients. More than 3,000 adults across six countries are checked by 15 clinics and laboratories and thanks to backing by Fleineken, Nigeria has been added to the list of participating countries. Both adults and children will be included in the study of the Highly Active Anti retroviral Therapy. Located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this initiative, financially supported by Heineken, consists of two established roadside clinics that provide services to 25,000 people every year. General health care, as well as HIV/AIDS prevention advice and treatment, are provided. Depending on the success of the current roadside clinics, more could be implemented to improve coverage in the area. Project King's Hope provides health care, as well as other measures that will help improve the quality of life, to those infected with HIV/AIDS. The beneficiaries of this project currently reside in the area of Olievenhoutbosch in the Gauteng Province. oundation Heineken Champions Planet House in Lagos, Nigeria provides a unique and exciting ambience for Heineken® consumers to enjoy the UEFA Champions League together
