World of Heineken 43 winter 2010
Heineken has been recognised by the United Nations for
its contribution to alleviating poverty in Sierra Leone.
This is part of the company's Africa-wide commitment to
procure at least 60% of its raw materials locally.
Heineken received the World Business Development Award
in recognition of its contribution to helping achieve the UN
Millennium Development Goals.
The international judging panel singled out Heineken's
groundbreaking work in sub-Saharan Africa, where the
company has, in many instances, switched from using
barley to a local crop, sorghum, as part of its local-sourcing
drive. Heineken has been developing its sorghum brewing
technology since 1988, as part of an effort to reduce its
environmental footprint across the value chain. The award-
winning project in Sierra Leone was established in 2005
with the goal of developing a sustainable local supply chain
for Sierra Leone Breweries Ltd.
Heineken's work in Sierra Leone has stimulated local
entrepreneurship, created hundreds of new jobs locally
and increased smallholder-farmer's incomes. It is a
tangible example of Heineken's commitment to 'Brewing
a Better Future'.
Speaking after the awards ceremony in New York in
September, Tom de Man, Regional President Heineken
Africa Middle East, said: "We are extremely proud
to receive this award. Our project in Sierra Leone is one
of many efforts to empower the communities in which we
operate. It is a testament to the successful co-operation
between public development institutions and private
sector stakeholders."

In November,
the third annual
Heineken Regatta
Curasao pushed
the boat out into
spectacular Caribbean
surroundings, crystal
clear waters and
an entertainment
experience second
to none.
The three day regatta
started and finished in
the historic city centre of
UNESCO World Heritage
site, Willemstad. Sailors
battled for the main
prizes: the Heineken
Regatta Curagao, the
NIBanc Cup, and the
newly added TNG
Swiss Watches
Commodores Cup for
the spinnaker class.
And of course, no Heineken event would be complete
without the opportunity to enjoy a Heineken® among
friends. So for those who didn't take to the sea, there were
ample opportunities to get into the swing of things at the
Heineken Regatta Village where Caribbean cuisine and
chilled fresh Heineken® could be savoured.
By night the village was transformed into a premium
concert area with a mix of local and world-class artists.
The headline act on the Saturday night was none other
than the GRAMMY® award winning, Jamaican-born
singer, Shaggy.
Another onshore highlight was the illuminated boat parade,
which took place at nightfall, creating a spectacular sight
in Annabay.
