A wave of rebuilding BEER CAN TRAVEL On December 26th 2004, a devastating tsunami swept across South East Asia and East Africa. In the weeks that followed, more than 250,000 people lost their lives, with thousands more left homeless without food, shelter or medical care. The northwestern island of Aceh in Indonesia was seriously affected, bearing the brunt of the massive tidal wave. World of Heineken 38 summer 2008 Heineken supported the victims of this natural disaster through various initiatives. Employees from Operating Companies around the world raised funds for immediate relief, as well as for more long-term development and reconstruction programmes. OpCo Management and the Heineken Executive Board pledged funds in addition to the donations raised by employees. These funds were channeled through Multi- Bintang and local charities. One example of this is a project run by Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Indonesia in Banda Aceh, a place whose name will be linked to the tsunami for years to come. HFH Indonesia is a non-profit organisation dedicated to eradicating homelessness and poverty housing by means of constructing simple, decent and affordable housing with low-income families. Established in 1997 as part of the global network of Habitat for Humanity International, the organisation now has affiliates in various parts of the country including Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Manado and Batam. Its aim is to make a difference in the lives of Indonesians who live below poverty line, regardless of creed, sex, religion, colour and race. www.habitat.org 17 Houses under construction in 2005
