GRAND SPONSOR
When the Olympic flame is lit in Athens on 13 August 2004, the
Games will return to their birthplace and the only truly world
wide event can begin. Heineken will join this global sporting
event, where the world becomes one.
Heinekeri is proud to be the Grand National Sponsor of the
ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, the world's biggest sporting event.
The event is big in terms of organisation, big in numbers and big
in prestige. This year 10,500 athletes from all over the globe will
take part in the ultimate event and strive for the pinnacle of
success: the gold medal. In 38 venues a total of 28 different sports
will take place. There will be 301 ceremonies in just 16 days.
The achievements of the athletes will be watched by 5.5 million
spectators in the stadiums and by billions of Olympic fans on
television from all over the world. 21,500 members of the media
are expected to cover the games. A total of 45,000 volunteers
will help to make the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games a success.
The upcoming Olympic Games are extra special because the Games
will return to the birthplace of both the ancient and modern
Olympic Games. It was in 1896 that the Olympic Games as we now
know them took place in Athens for the first time, so the Greeks
are excited that the Games are coming back home after so many
years. For Heineken this event is also special and much more than
a regular sponsoring event, as preparations already started in 2001.
That year signalled the official start of the development of a wide
variety of Heineken events surrounding the Olympic Games.
"Integrated and dynamic" - is how the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) described the Heineken Olympic programme.
