Heineken aims to be among the best performing breweries in
energy efficiency worldwide in the year 2010. Some of the
breweries are already amongst the best performing, but others
still have to increase their energy reducing activities. For the
period 2001- 2004 Heineken has set a 7.5% target for reduction
of energy consumption. The Heineken policy is further detailed
in the Energy Policy Statement.
While the Kyoto Agreement and the Bonn Protocol still have to be
translated into national legislation and action plans, Heineken
wants to contribute to these challenges. Heineken needs energy to
manufacture and transport its products. Furthermore, energy is
required to produce and transport raw materials, packaging and
auxiliary materials. Heineken acknowledges that the availability of
fossil fuels is not unlimited and that their use may lead to climate
change. Heineken has therefore issued the Energy Policy Statement
to raise awareness for this issue, to stay a world-class performer
on energy efficiency and to reduce the environmental impact of
energy use.
Changing behaviour in respect of consumption starts with the
creation of awareness. The programme Aware of Water has
