THE WORLD OF HEINEKEN
Alfred Heineken was a man who could turn his hand to anything.
He was not only a brewer, businessman and adman but also
someone who was interested in other things in life. He was keen
on architecture, photography, music, art and 'inventing things',
as he himself put it. "I've always striven to become homo
unversalis: brewer, anthropologist, architect, composer,
photographer - not that I succeeded, but that's the only
interesting way to live."
Throughout his life Alfred Heineken was all too aware of the risk
that the demands of running a business might take up all of his
precious time. So he made time for his passions, like music and
photography, spent many an hour deep in a book - preferably
non-fiction - and immersed himself in architecture. This broad
outlook on the world was a family trait. His grandfather on his
mother's side liked to build, his father took photographs and was
a music lover. I've learnt to play the piano as a small child, but
never learnt to read music. I could play anything by ear. Just like
having a nose for business."
Alfred Heineken followed in his father's footsteps: music became
his great passion. Despite not being able to read music, he
composed a great deal of music, and some of his pieces were
