.proposed that we all had a beer, because he would never again
look as handsome as he did in this portrait. It was the only time
I've had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Heineken. I was impressed
that afternoon by the great interest she showed in the jobs of the
members of the staff delegation. I look back on that meeting with
great pleasure and respect."
Pax van Kol (right on the photo right) remembers Mr Heineken
as a good-humoured and down-to-earth man who kept in regular
touch with the people on the shopfloor. In 1995 Mr Heineken
visited the brewery in's Hertogenbosch and the laboratory,
where he was able to see images of Heineken's A-yeast for the
first time on the monitor of the new electron microscope.
"My part in that meeting with Mr Heineken," explains Corné
Pennings (left on the photo right), "was to tell him something
about Heineken's A-yeast. He showed a keen interest in my brief
presentation and I was surprised how much he knew about the
subject. I didn't have high expectations of my meeting with Mr
Heineken: I thought he would just be making a quick tour of the
brewery, more of a duty call. My expectations turned out to be
incorrect. I knew I'd met a man who had played a significant part
in the development of Heineken, a healthy company which is still
growing and which you can be proud to work for. That meeting,
and Mr Heineken personally, made a big impression on me."
