C H OCTOBER BEER FESTIVAL I THE FESTIVAL IS FULL OF TRADITION In October 2001, the world-famous "Oktoberfest" in Munich, Germany, was organised for the 168th time. It originates from 1810, when wedding festivities for a German prince were celebrated extensively. Nowadays, the October Beer Festival is the world's biggest international festival. It attracts more than six million visitors from all over the world. Germany is the largest beer market in Europe and is strategically situated in the heart of Europe. Munich, the capital of the German state of Bavaria, has hosted this event for as long as it has existed. Each year more than six million litres beer are consumed and more than 200,000 pork sausages are eaten at the October Beer Festival. This exuberant event takes place in huge party tents that are built by the Munich breweries and can accommodate several thousand people at a time. The Festival is full of tradition and the centuries old Bavarian beer culture is the centre of all excitement. Speciality brews like Flacker-Pschorr and Paulaner Oktoberfest beer and PAGE 34 Paulaner Weiss beer are considered beers of paramount importance. In 2000, the sales volume of this leading Bavarian white beer at the Oktoberfest increased by more than 17 per cent. The beer has a milky look (as a result of the yeast it contains), a tangy aroma and a very smooth taste.
