Environmental performance
Targets
In 2000, Heineken published its first (bi-annual) environmental
report covering the efforts and environmental performance of
the European breweries, malting plants and soft drink
production plants for the period 1997-1999. In the intervening
years until the next report in 2002, a summary of the highlights
is given by means of an update.
One of the most striking things in the update is the fact that the
water-saving workshops that have been held for brewery operators
in various regions are bringing a further increase in environmental
awareness and performance. These training courses are part of the
Heineken 'aware of water' programme. Clean water is of importance
to Heineken as an ingredient of beer as well as during the
production process. In general fresh water is scarce which is the
reason why Heineken devotes much attention to responsible use.
Last year several changes took place. Several acquisitions have
been incorporated in the environmental reporting system:
the Affligem Brewery in Belgium, the breweries of Martin and
Gemer in Slovakia as well as the breweries of Cruzcampo in Spain.
The specific water consumption of the breweries has decreased
from 6.0 to 5.7hl/hl (target of 2000 was 5.8hl/hl). At various
locations water savings have been achived, for example in Stara
Zagorka (Bulgaria), where the specific water consumption has
decreased by 24%.
For the coming period 2001-2003 Heineken has set targets for
water, electricity and thermal energy consumption for breweries,
malting plants and soft drink production plants, which aim at a
reduction of these consumptionlevels.

update are available in print as well as on the Heineken website
