The Heineken bottle is 8.5 metres tall
(Heineken was the only advertiser
allowed to exceed the 'standard'
height of eight metres) and three
metres wide. The glass on the beer
mat is six metres high and the beer
mat has a diameter of 3.7 metres.
The illustrations were printed on
heavy-duty canvas, which was
stretched between aluminium frames
and then assembled at Schiphol. The
photos on these pages give an
impression of how the visuals were
produced. Initially the idea of cre
ating a 3D visual for Vision Square
was considered. However, a computer
simulation showed that the picture
would look very distorted, especially
if viewed from close up.
Chances that you will get to see the
Heineken bottle and glass on Vision
Square are reasonably high, as the
visual will remain in place for five
years. At the moment the possibility
of installing a similar Vision Square
at other world airports is being
looked at. We shall have to wait and
see whether Heineken will also be on
display there, but the idea is certainly
attractive.
