The co-premiers of Cambodia and the
prime minister of Singapore perfor
med the official opening of Cambodia
Brewery Ltd. at the end of 1996. The
brewery is a joint venture of Asia
Pacific Breweries Ltd. and Progress
Import Export.
Asia Pacific Breweries has an 80%
stake in the new brewery. Progress,
which holds the remaining 20%, was
already the leading distributor of
APB's Tiger and ABC Stout brands.
The new brewery has a capacity of
270,000 hectolitres and provides -
direct and indirect - employment for
700 people. The brewery brews Tiger
for cans and kegs and ABC Stout for
cans. With a 45% share Tiger and
ABC Stout are already the market
leaders in Cambodia. Construction of
the brewery cost 46 million dollars.
An amount of one million dollars was
spent on the construction of a waste
water purification plant, the very
first of its kind in Cambodia.
The Cambodian beer market is
still modest in volume. Per capita
consumption is two litres a year.
However, the beer market is growing
by ten per cent a year. Partly thanks
to the country's economic growth
the consumption of beer is being
given an extra boost.
In the speech he gave at the offi
cial opening ceremony General
Manager Rick Linck underlined the
importance of employee training. "In
order to ensure that we will have
highly qualified personnel through
out the organisation, Cambodia
Brewery has given high priority to
training. We will invest over one mil
lion dollars on training alone in the
coming two years. This is a signifi
cant amount which in the long run
should enable us to have local people
in management posts".
Rick Linck added that internal
training courses were not the only
area on which the brewery is focu
sing its attention: "We will become
an integral part of Cambodian socie
ty. We strongly believe that our con
tribution to the further development
of the national economy lies in the
support of educational institutes."
On behalf of the shareholders, Rick
Linck presented the government of
