(AMBODIA BREWERY INVESTS IN PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT NEW CONTRACTS WITH BRASSERIES DU NAR0C The co-premiers of Cambodia and the prime minister of Singapore perfor med the official opening of Cambodia Brewery Ltd. at the end of 1996. The brewery is a joint venture of Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd. and Progress Import Export. Asia Pacific Breweries has an 80% stake in the new brewery. Progress, which holds the remaining 20%, was already the leading distributor of APB's Tiger and ABC Stout brands. The new brewery has a capacity of 270,000 hectolitres and provides - direct and indirect - employment for 700 people. The brewery brews Tiger for cans and kegs and ABC Stout for cans. With a 45% share Tiger and ABC Stout are already the market leaders in Cambodia. Construction of the brewery cost 46 million dollars. An amount of one million dollars was spent on the construction of a waste water purification plant, the very first of its kind in Cambodia. The Cambodian beer market is still modest in volume. Per capita consumption is two litres a year. However, the beer market is growing by ten per cent a year. Partly thanks to the country's economic growth the consumption of beer is being given an extra boost. In the speech he gave at the offi cial opening ceremony General Manager Rick Linck underlined the importance of employee training. "In order to ensure that we will have highly qualified personnel through out the organisation, Cambodia Brewery has given high priority to training. We will invest over one mil lion dollars on training alone in the coming two years. This is a signifi cant amount which in the long run should enable us to have local people in management posts". Rick Linck added that internal training courses were not the only area on which the brewery is focu sing its attention: "We will become an integral part of Cambodian socie ty. We strongly believe that our con tribution to the further development of the national economy lies in the support of educational institutes." On behalf of the shareholders, Rick Linck presented the government of General Manager Rick Linck addresses the guests at the official opening of Cambodia Brewery on 4 November 1996. Cambodia with a cheque for 40,000 dollars for educational purposes, specifically for the building of schools. Several months ago Heineken strengthened its partnership with Brasseries du Maroc with the signing of a new technical assistance con tract and extended licensing con tracts. Brasseries du Maroc has three breweries (in Casablanca, Tangier and Fez) and a bottling plant in Marra- kesh and brews Heineken and Amstel under licence. In the years ahead Heineken will be working together more closely with the Moroccan brewery in the area of marketing.
