RUGBY SEVENS IN DUBAI ATTRJ
PARTICIPANTS FRON ALL OVER
The Dubai Rugby Sevens are
held each year in November.
TWenty-four teams from all
corners of the globe play a
three-day tournament, com
peting for eight places in the
Rugby World Cup. Last
November was the 27th edi
tion of the Rugby Sevens and
the team from Fiji turned out
to be the strongest, winning
the final against South Africa
by a wide margin of points.
Other countries which took
part included the United
States, Zambia, Denmark,
Russia, Botswana, Cote
d'lvoire, Taiwan, Tunisia,
Scotland, Singapore and
Wales.
Heineken Export,
together with local agent
M.M.I., has been supporting
the Rugby Sevens for many
years; first with Amstel and,
since last year, with
Heineken. The switch to
Heineken is due to the grow
ing sponsoring role that
Heineken is playing in the
sport of rugby. Over the
years M.M.I, has helped to
expand the event from a
small-scale tournament into
a fully fledged World Cup
Qualifying Tournament.

At the same time that it
launched Amstel Beer in
cans, Antilliaanse Brouwerij
on Curasao also set up a
scheme for collecting empty
cans. This initiative is not
only good for the environ
ment, but also provides
financial support for the
community centres on the
island.
The island of Curasao has fif
teen community centres.
They organise all sorts of cul
tural and sports activities.
The community centres act
as collection points for the
empty Amstel cans and re
ceive five cents from the
brewery for each can return
ed. With the money they
receive for the cans, the
community centres can sup
plement the low subsidies
they are granted for their
work. Antilliaanse Brouwerij
takes care of the transport
of the (aluminium) cans to
businesses which handle
their further recycling.
