c
had over here, Dr. J. H. van Roijen,
accepted the National Honorary
Chairmanship of the Holland Saint
Nicholas Committee. Baron de Vos
van Steenwijk, is New York's Honor
ary Chairman.
It was unfortunate that this year
part of the outdoom activities con
nected with Saint Nicholas week in
New York City, was actually washed
out by pouring rain. However,
Saint Nicholas arrived safely at City
Hall on December 5th and was graci
ously received by Mayor Vincent Im-
pellitteri who received a present from
Holland from a little Dutch girl.
That afternoon, Saint Nicholas visit
ed The Netherlands Club in Rocke
feller Plaza where 10Ü American
children selected at our request by
teh Catholic, Jewish and Protestant
Charities were treated to ice cream
and received some fine toys. They
were given a number of imported
sweets presented by Dutch importers
such as boxes of marzipan, cookies
and all kinds of fine Dutch chocolates.
The traditional boterletters, a very
tasty Saint Nicholas cake with an
almond pie filling and the usual
speculaas were quite in evidence.
When I addressed the gathering at
The Netherlands Club, I was asked
who played the role of Saint Nicho
las and I think I gave them the cor
rect answer: Saint Nicholas is more
than a person. Saint Nicholas is the
spirit of generosity, the spirit of
kindness. The spirit of Saint Nicho
las has outlived all conquerors of the
past seventeen hundred years. Call
him Saint Nicholas or call him
Santa Claus. He is universally ad
mired. There was the little boy who
was asked by Saint Nicholas what he
would like to be when he grew up.
The little boy said: "I would like to
be Saint Nicholas like you. "And
why?" asked the good Saint. And
the little boy answered, "I'd like to
be Saint Nicholas because then I'll
nave to work only one day a year!"
I think that I can safely say that
all the members of the Heineken's
family are going to work for the
spirit of kindness all the other 364
days of the year!
