Profile Heineken N.V. has its roots in Amsterdam
where, in 1864, Gerard Adriaan Heineken acquired
the Hooiberg (Haystack) brewery - which itself dated
back to 1592. Very shortly afterwards operations
expanded nation-wide and over the border. Today, we
are the world's most international brewing group,
with operations in more than 170 countries."
In 1997 73,8 million hectolitres of beer were brewed
under the supervision of Heineken, ensuring the
Group's second position in the world rankings.
Production is based at more than 100 breweries in
just over 50 countries.
Heineken is active in every continent through inte
rests in brewing companies, export, and licensing
partners. The main thrust of activities is in Europe.
The Group's corporate brands are Heineken, Amstel
and Murphy's. These brands are complemented by
a large number of domestic and regional brands.
Heineken is the most international brand in the
world and the leading brand in Europe.
Research and development are high on the Group's
priority list. These activities are co-ordinated from
the R&D centre in the Netherlands. Group companies
and associated breweries worldwide are supported
with technical and technological services from the
Netherlands.
