Heineken
The origins of Heineken N.V. lie in Amsterdam, where in
1864 Gerard Adriaan Heineken acquired the brewery
De Hooiberg dating from 1592. Soon after the takeover the
field of activity was extended to the whole of the Netherlands
and a start was made on activities abroad. Now the enterprise
has become the most international brewery group in the
world and is active in more than 170 countries.*
In 1995, 64.3 million hectolitres of beer was brewed under
the supervision of Heineken, giving the Company the No. 2
position in the world rankings. Production takes place in 116
breweries spread over 57 countries. Although the main area
of activities is in Europe, Heineken has interests in brewery
companies and licence-holders all over the world.
The Company's international brands are Heineken, Amstel,
Buckler and Murphy's Irish Stout. These brands are
complemented and supported by a large number of national
and regional brands. Heineken is the world's most
international beer brand and is the leading brand in Europe.
In the United States, Heineken is the biggest import brand.
Research and development occupy an important position
within the enterprise. These activities are co-ordinated from
the Research Development Centre in the Netherlands.
Services are rendered worldwide to affiliated breweries in
both the engineering and the technological field.
