In Rwanda beer sales by Brasseries et
Limonaderies du Rwanda Bralirwa'
S.A.R.L. rose, but earnings were under
pressure. Sales of the Mützig beer
launched in 1987 did not proceed entirely
as desired; steps will be taken to
introduce a small bottle. The President
of the Republic commissioned the
enlarged brewery at Gisenyi.
Sales of soft drinks were below last
year's level.
In the People's Republic of Congo the
turnover and earnings of Brasserie de
Brazzaville S.A. rose. At the beginning
of November Amstel beer was launched.
In Réunion there was again an increase
in the sales of Brasseries de Bourbon
S.A. A filling line for plastic bottles was
installed in the soft drink factory.
Amstel beer is now being brewed locally,
whilst imported Buckler has been
introduced.
In the following countries we have
participations which are not consolidated.
In Nigeria Nigerian Breweries Ltd. was
able to achieve considerably higher sales
in a declining beer market. In view of an
import ban on barley, products have
been developed which are based entirely
on local raw materials. These products
will be marketed in 1989.
Sales by Kumasi Brewery Ltd. in Ghana
remained at the same level. The
improvement in the economic
circumstances gives some confidence
for the future.
The renovation of the brewery is
proceeding satisfactorily.
In Sierra Leone the situation at Sierra
Leone Brewery Ltd. remains very
alarming. The brewery is facing a lack
of raw materials as a result of the
shortage of foreign exchange; partly as
a result of this, the overhaul programme
has suffered further delay.
In Angola the breweries Nova Empresa
de Cervejas de Angola 'Nocal' S.A.R.L.
and EKA-Empresa Angolana de Cervejas
S.A.R.L. had to contend with a shortage
of raw materials, as a result of which
there was a setback to production.
Consequently sales were at a lower level.
International Brasserie S.A. in Cameroon
was able to step up sales in a declining
beer market. Despite a further expansion
of capacity, it can hardly keep pace with
the rising demand for the Amstel and
Mützig brands.
At Brasseries du Logone S.A., in Chad,
sales were maintained at the previous
year's level. The brewery at Moundou
has been brought fully up to standard
from the technical point of view.
In Morocco our licensing partner, Société
des Brasseries du Maroc S.A,, has
started the construction of a brewery, in
Casablanca, in which connection we are
giving technical support. Within this
framework we have acquired a small
interest in that company. Sales of
Heineken beer again proceeded
satisfactorily.
In Zambia, where we give technical
support to Zambia Breweries Ltd., there
was again a delay in the modernization
of the two breweries as a result of a
shortage of foreign exchange. t
Asia/Australia/Oceania
There are Heineken interests in brewery
enterprises in Indonesia, Singapore
(together with interests in Malaysia, Papua
New Guinea and New Zealand), New
Caledonia, Jordan, Lebanon and China.
Production of Group products under licence
also takes place in Japan and Tahiti.
In Indonesia, New Caledonia and Papua
New Guinea also soft drinks are produced.
The economy in Indonesia grew only
moderately, but the beer market again
showed considerable growth. P.T. Multi
Bintang Indonesia was able to maintain
its share in the beer market. Sales of
soft drinks remained at the previous
year's level. The company's earnings
