The extension of capacity at the brewery
in Kigali will be completed in the spring
of 1988.
Sales of soft drinks showed a satisfactory
rise.
In the People's Republic of Congo, better
earnings were achieved by Brasserie de
Brazzaville S.A. than in the previous
year. The brewery has been expanded
and completely modernized.
Sales of beer and soft drinks by
Brasseries de Bourbon S.A., in
La Réunion, were higher than in 1986.
Earnings, too, showed an increase. The
market position was strengthened by the
launching of Amstel beer.
In the following countries we have parti
cipations which are not consolidated.
In Nigeria sales by Nigerian Breweries
Ltd. were up on the previous year.
The area of the agri-business project for
the production of local raw materials has
been further extended in accordance
with the plan. As from January 1, 1988.
the Nigerian government imposed a ban
on the import of barley malt, so that
production must take place solely on the
basis of local raw materials. It is uncertain
how the market will react to these prod
ucts.
For the first time for many years the
economy in Ghana is again showing
some growth, due to the restructuring
programme introduced by the govern
ment. It would appear that the very nec
essary replacement of the installations
of Kumasi Brewery Ltd. can begin now
that the required foreign exchange permit
is almost certain to be obtained.
Sales were slightly below the previous
year's level.
As in the previous year, the situation at
Sierra Leone Brewery Ltd., in Sierra
Leone, was still very alarming. The
planned overhaul to improve the old
installations had to be postponed owing
to lack of foreign exchange.
The breweries Nova Empresa de
Cervejas de Angola 'Nocal' S.A.R.L. and
EKA Empresa Angolana de Cervejas
S.A.R.L., in Angola, again had to contend
with sluggish sales. We do not expect
any improvement in the situation for 1988.
International Brasserie S.A., in Cameroon,
had an increase in sales, whilst the total
beer market remained at the same level.
In particular, there was a considerable
rise in sales of Amstel beer brewed under
licence.
At Brasseries du Logone S.A., in Chad,
sales were below the previous year's
level. The technical repairs to the brewery
are proceeding according to plan.
In Morocco a contract for the construction
of a brewery has been concluded with
Société des Brasseries du Maroc S.A.
It is expected that the government permit
will be obtained in the current year, after
which construction will be started.
There was again a substantial increase
in sales of Heineken beer brewed under
licence.
In Zambia, where we have a technical
management contract with Zambia
Breweries Ltd., the project to modernize
the two breweries was seriously delayed
by a shortage of hard currency.
Asia Australia Oceania
There are Heineken interests in brewery
enterprises in Indonesia. Singapore (together
with interests in Malaysia, Papua New
Guinea and New Zealand), New Caledonia,
Jordan and Lebanon. Production of Group
products under licence also takes place in
Japan and Tahiti.
Soft drinks are also produced in Indonesia,
New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.
Although the economic situation in
Indonesia did not improve, the volume
of the total beer market nevertheless
increased. Despite this growth there is
still an overcapacity in the brewing indus
try. Consequently margins remain under
pressure. Sales by P.T. Multi Bintang
Indonesia increased, as did earnings.
