In Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay we have a minority interest in Quilmes International (Bermuda) Ltd. The sales of the breweries in Argentina and Paraguay proceeded satisfactorily. The construction of a new brewery at Corrientes, Argentina, is fully under way and it is expected that production can be started in the course of 1988. In Uruguay, after an interruption in produc tion as a result of labour conflicts, sales of beer are now back at the old level. In Surinam the production of Surinaamse Brouwerij N.V. encountered problems as a result of the low availability of raw materials and spare parts. In Costa Rica Heineken beer is brewed under licence by Cervecerias de Costa Rica S.A.. a subsidiary of Florida Ice Farm Company S.A. Sales were at the same level as in 1986. Africa With regard to Africa our activities are aimed at local production of beer and soft drinks, production under licence, technical management and exports from the Nether lands. The enterprise has a brewery in the People's Republic of Congo and has inter ests in breweries in Zaire. Rwanda, Burundi, La Réunion, Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ghana. Chad and Angola. In Zaire we have a glass factory. Furthermore the Group is engaged in agricultural and agri business activities. Many countries in Africa were again faced during the year under review with a problematic financial and economic situ ation. Above all, the size of the foreign debts constitutes a great problem for these countries. In order to be able to cope with the difficulties, further econo mies and restrictions on the obtaining of foreign currency were introduced in sev eral countries, as a result of which the import of raw materials, spare parts and equipment became even more difficult. There was also a further decline in pur chasing power. Sales of imported beer managed, however, to maintain the pre vious year's level. The sales of nearly all our affiliates showed a rising trend and the year was concluded with better earnings on balance. The training possibilities for brewery per sonnel were intensified. In addition to the English-speaking training school of Nigerian Breweries, a training institute in Kinshasa (Zaire) intended for employees from the French-speaking countries in Africa has now also been taken into use. The sales and earning of Brasseries, Limonaderies et Malteries du Zaïre 'Bralima' S.A.R.L., in Zaire, improved despite the increased competition and a sluggish beer market. Sales of soft drinks showed a considerable increase over the previous year. The modernization of the brewery at Kinshasa was completed. A start was made on the renewal of the other brew eries of the Bralima group. Our interest in the glass factory Bouteillerie de Kinshasa 'Boukin' S.A.R.L. was increased during the year under review to 100%. Brasseries et Limonaderies du Burundi 'Brarudi' S.A.R.L., in Burundi, was able to improve its sales and earnings in 1987. In addition to Amstel beer, the new bre wery at Gitega is also producing Primus beer. Sales of Amstel beer proceeded satisfactorily. The agri-business activities of Brarudi also developed along positive lines. Amongst other things, this enter prise has a cattle-breeding establishment at which a by-product of the brewing process, spent grains, is used as fodder. At Brasseries et Limonaderies du Rwanda 'Bralirwa' S.A.R.L., in Rwanda, beer sales were maintained at the previous year's level. Earnings rose as a result of a better margin. During the year under review locally brewed Mützig beer was launched.
