Sales of beers brewed in Canada under
licence from third parties declined. Sales
of Grizzly beer were also under pressure.
The positive growth of imported Heineken
beer continued, despite the increased
competition from a growing number of
imported brands.
Caribbean
In the Caribbean the price difference
between our imported beer and that of
most rival brands became larger, partly
as a result of the fall in local currencies
in relation to the guilder. Our brands,
however, have been able to maintain or
improve their strong position in practically
all the Caribbean export markets. The
favourable development of tourism has
contributed substantially to this.
In Trinidad the beer market showed a
further growth. National Brewing
Company Ltd. maintained its market
share.
A fall in the sales of Heineken beer was
offset by a sharp rise in sales of the local
brand Stag.
Sales by Brasserie Lorraine S.A. in
Martinique showed an increase as a
result of the growth in sales of soft drinks.
Sales of the local beer Lorraine declined
somewhat; this was offset by a rise in
sales of the Heineken beer imported by
the brewery.
In St. Lucia the growth in the sales of
Windward Leeward Brewery Ltd. con
tinued. Both local sales and exports to
the surrounding countries showed an
increase.
Despite economic problems in the
Netherlands Antilles and Aruba there
was a rise in sales of Amstel beer brewed
by Antilliaanse Brouwerij N.V. Particularly
in Aruba the brewery managed to enlarge
its market share.
Sales of imported Heineken beer also
showed an increase.
The new brewery in the Bahamas of
Commonwealth Brewery Ltd. was com
missioned in the spring. Both locally
brewed Heineken beer and Guinness
stout produced under licence were
launched. The malt drink Vita Malt was
also marketed.
In Puerto Rico the market share of
imported Heineken beer was under
pressure. This was due to the increased
competition.
In the following three countries we have
participations which are not consolidated.
In the Dominican Republic the beer sales
of Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana S.A.
rose, despite several price increases.
Sales of Heineken beer brewed under
licence showed a strong growth com
pared with the previous year.
Despite political unrest and accompanying
strikes in Haiti, the sales of non-alcoholic
Heineken Malta, which is produced under
licence by Brasserie Nationale d'Haïti
S.A., were doubled.
In Jamaica the beer sales of Desnoes
Geddes Ltd. rose, despite intensified
competition. Sales of Heineken beer
showed a sharp rise and the market
share increased.
Central and South America
In most countries of Central and South
America the foreign debt burden and the
high rate of inflation were an obstacle to
economic recovery. In Argentina and
Brazil, where the financial reforms lost
their effectiveness, inflation again in
creased. In the meantime new measures
to combat inflation are in course of pre
paration.
Sales by the four breweries in Brazil in
which we have a small interest developed
along very positive lines. The new
brewery in Sao Paulo became operational
in September. In addition, we acquired
a 7% interest in a new Kaiser brewery
to be built in the vicinity of Porto Alegre
in the south of Brazil. This brewery,
which will have an initial capacity of
