In Nigeria production was below the pre
vious year's level at our minority partici
pation Nigerian Breweries Ltd. Big prob
lems occurred in the obtaining of import
permits and the financing of imports,
resulting in a shortage of imported raw
materials. Therefore undivided attention
was paid to the processing of locally
grown cereals. The local raw materials
component in the Star and Gulder brands
was increased. Furthermore, in mid-1986
a new type of beer was introduced under
the brand name Rex, using a consider
able proportion of sorghum as raw ma
terial. This product was well received by
the consumer.
As part of a large agro-industrial project
the first 300 hectares of agricultural land
for the production of local raw materials
were cultivated. Over several years the
total area will be expanded to 5,000 hec
tares. This project also comprises infra-
structural facilities for the drying and
storage of its own harvest, as well as for
local raw materials bought from third
parties.
The sales of International Brasserie S.A.
in Douala, Cameroon, are developing
satisfactorily. A further increase in the
capacity of the brewery is being contem
plated. Sales of Amstel beer produced
under licence have grown and the Mützig
brand is maintaining its position in its
market segment, despite the very strong
competition.
In Sierra Leone the production at Sierra
Leone Brewery Ltd. remained at a low
level due to shortage of raw materials.
No improvement is expected in this posi
tion for the time being. Partly as a result
of the sharp devaluation of the leone,
the company is in bad shape.
Sales rose at Kumasi Brewery Ltd. in
Ghana. Due to arrears of maintenance
the technical condition of the brewery is
unsatisfactory. Efforts are being made
to obtain foreign exchange permits in
order to facilitate the import of parts for
maintenance of the brewery.
In Chad the sales of Brasseries du
Logone S.A. were lower as a result of a
sharp decline in the purchasing power
of the population in the south of the coun
try, where income from cotton-growing
fell considerably in the past year. Main
tenance is being carried out, accompan
ied by a slight increase in production
capacity.
As in the previous year, the two breweries
in Angola were only able to utilize part
of the available capacity. The economic
position of this country has further wor
sened as a result of the reduction in oil
revenues.
Sales of Fleineken beer brewed under
licence in Morocco by Société des
Brasseries du Maroc S.A. have further
improved through the efforts of our part
ner.
In Zambia we are involved in the main
tenance of the breweries in Lusaka and
Ndola of Zambia Breweries Ltd. Some
progress was achieved in this, though
we were confronted by a shortage of
hard currency. Efforts are being made
with limited resources to maintain pro
duction at the current level.
Asia/Australia/Oceania
There are interests in brewery enterprises
in Indonesia, Singapore (with interests in
Singapore, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea
and New Zealand), New Caledonia, Jordan
and Lebanon. Production under licence
takes place at all our affiliates, as well as
in Japan and Tahiti.
Soft drinks are also produced in Indonesia,
New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.
Although economic developments in
South East Asia did not show any recov
ery in 1986, sales of beer increased.
This positive effect was not sufficient to
compensate the negative effect on our
earnings at the lower exchange rates for
currencies which are important to us.
Exports to the Far East remained at al
most the same level. Sales of Fleineken
beer in Hong Kong rose substantially.
