Beer sales in Africa
(in millions of hectolitres)
In Africa the activities relate to local pro
duction of beer under our supervision,
production under licence, technical
management and imports.
The enterprise has a brewery in the People's
Republic of Congo and participates in
breweries in Zaire. Rwanda, Burundi,
Réunion, Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone,
Ghana, Chad and Angola.
In an increasing number of countries the
production of Group beer brands is taking
place under licence. In Zambia the Group
is involved in the technical management of
Zambia Breweries Ltd. In addition to beer,
the companies in Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi
and Réunion also produce soft drinks, whilst
in Nigeria Green Sands shandy is produced
under licence. In Zaire we have an interest
in a glass factory. Furthermore the Group
is engaged in agricultural and agro-industrial
activities.
'Bralima' S.A.R.L., in Zairecontinued to
be under pressure. Particularly in the
important, growing market in and around
the capital Kinshasa, our Primus brand
lost market share.
Measures taken to improve the situation
should come to fruition in 1987.
The earnings of the glass factory Bouteil-
lerie de Kinshasa 'Boukin' S.A.R.L. were
again satisfactory.
Brasseries et Limonaderies du Burundi
'Brarudi' S.A.R.L., in Burundi, was able
to improve its earnings in 1986, mainly
as a result of higher turnover of the new
brewery at Gitega, which was in produc
tion for the first time for a full year in
1986. Sales of Amstel beer did extremely
well. The agro activities of Brarudi are
developing satisfactorily now that the
initial problems have been solved.
Amongst other things the company has
a cattle-breeding establishment at which
a large part of the by-products of the
brewing process, such as spent grains,
is used as fodder.
In Rwanda the sales and margin of
Brasseries et Limonaderies du Rwanda
'Bralirwa' S.A.R.L. did well. At present
the production capacity of the brewery
is being increased, which will be ready at
the end of 1987. Also in Rwanda a start
has been made on agricultural projects
connected with the brewery activities.
As a result of the restrictive price regime
of the authorities in the People's Republic
of Congo, Brasserie de Brazzaville S.A.
was unable to achieve any improvement
in earnings, despite an increase in vol
ume. In December 1986, however, the
system of price control was abolished
within the framework of liberalization of
the national economy. The capacity of
the brewery is at present being expanded
to 550,000 hectolitres per annum.
Sales and earnings at Brasseries de
Bourbon S.A. in Réunion, in which we
acquired a 51% interest in 1986, devel
oped satisfactorily. In the meantime
Heineken has undertaken the manage
ment of the brewery.
Many African countries in which we are
active are confronted by big financial and
economic problems. The measures taken
to redress this situation, often in conjunc
tion with international financial institutions,
have frequently led to a sharp decline in
purchasing power and to problems in the
import of raw materials and spare parts.
A positive feature, however, is that in a
number of cases liberalization of com
mercial and currency transactions forms
part of the remedial measures, which in
the long run may have a positive effect
on the earnings of our companies.

Imports of beer were hampered by credit
risks, transfer problems, import restric
tions and shortage of hard currency. Fur
thermore the consumption of more expen
sive consumer goods, such as imported
beer, fell through the decline in dispos
able income. All these factors also af
fected Heineken sales, resulting in a
decline in the volume of exports in rela
tion to 1985. Sales of beer brewed locally
under our supervision showed a slight
increase.
