The accommodation was thus acquired for an ef
fective central training.
Once again this year a large number of employees
from the Netherlands and abroad, especially from
developing countries, attended our technical trai
ning centre at Zoeterwoude.

The - variable - costs of raw materials, packing
materials and merchandise were 9.9% higher in
total. In most countries where price control is ap
plicable it was only permissible to pass on the rise in
these costs, to the exclusion of others, in the selling
prices; as a result of this the sales proceeds in
creased relatively less than the costs. Salaries and
social secutiry costs were 13.8% higher; this was
largely due to the rise in these costs in a number of
foreign enterprises, especially those located in
countries with a high rate of inflation.
Trading profit
The trading profit increased by 3.3% and amounted
to N.fl. 256.2 million.
This corresponds to 9.6% of the turnover, com
pared with 10.-% in the year 1976/1977.
The turnover, comprising the sales proceeds and
miscellaneous income, rose by 8.2% to
N.fl. 2,671.6 million.
