- Netherlands Antilles The efforts to increase once again the turnover and profit of Antilliaanse Brouwerij N.V., of Wil lemstad, have had the desired results. Owing to the decline in value of the Antillean guilder, higher prices must be expected for imported raw materials and packaging materials. - Martinique The new construction project of Brasserie Lorraine S.A. is at present in full swing and is proceeding according to our expectations. Efforts are being made to achieve a further improvement in the rate of return by widening the product range. - Guadeloupe The contract with S.A. des Grandes Brasseries Antillaises (SAGBA) for technical assistance has been renewed. It has also been agreed that SAGBA will brew one or more of our brands under licence. - Puerto Rico The contract with Cervecerfa Corona Inc., of San Juan, for the production of Amstel Malta under licence was terminated, since neither we nor our contractual partners were satisfied with the results achieved. It is noteworthy that the sales of Heineken beer imported from the Netherlands show a strongly upward trend, despite the intense protection of locally brewed beer. Surinam The economic problems facing Surinam during the period under review have unfortunately not been without their effect on the course of affairs in Surinaamse Brouwerij N.V., of Paramaribo. Although no further increase in turnover took place, the level of profit was maintained. AFRICA In our African enterprises the sales of beer have once again increased substantially - in a number of breweries the capacity limit is being approached - but the relative fall in production costs resulting therefrom does not always offset the rise in costs. Moreover, in several countries we are confronted with prices fixed by the government authorities, in which frequently no cost increases may be passed on. 16
