New Zealand
Leopard Brewery Ltd., of Hastings, in which Malayan Breweries Ltd. similarly
participates, has continued the growth of recent years. Considerable extensions are
in progress.
Indonesia
The economy of Indonesia is developing favourably. In 1971 and 1972, however,
the traditional exports suffered from the low world market prices, and this has had
a detrimental effect on the growth of disposable income.
P.T. Perusahaan Bir Indonesia, of Surabaya, still managed to achieve a satisfactory
increase in turnover. Reference may be made to the annual report of that company.
In the light of the long-term development of the beer market and our position in
this market, it was decided to build a second brewery, namely near Djakarta.
Construction has been commenced.
The Indonesian authorities have in the meantime also granted other groups per
mission to establish breweries. It is open to question whether the sudden expansion
of production capacity which will thereby arise in the short term will not be consider
ably greater than the growth of the beer market.
Lebanon
A further increase in turnover can be reported both for the beer under its own brand
and for Amstel beer produced by Brasserie Malterie Almaza S.A.L., of Beirut.
Preparations are being made for the stepping-up of production capacity, amongst
other things by the installing of a second bottling line.
Jordania
The growth in the turnover of Jordan Brewery Co. Ltd., of Amman, is still sluggish
as a result of the drastic price discounts given by the competitors. Nevertheless this
small but financially very sound brewery has managed to maintain its turnover,
despite the many adversities affecting the country in which it is established.
In order to improve profitability the brewery has proceeded to include soft drinks
(Seven-Up) in its range of products.
Iraq
Arrangements exist in Eastern Brewery Company S.A., of Baghdad, for production
under licence of Amstel Gold.
There is only a limited market available for this beer. Nevertheless the sales are at
a higher level than in the previous year.
