Heineken technical efficiency in a Pacific Paradise
Efficacité technique d'Heineken dans
un Paradis du Pacifique
How planned maintenance reaches out to the other side of the world
The bar is air-conditioned and the taped
background music acceptably discreet.
You hear waves gently lapping the near
by beach. A slight evening breeze rustles
the palms. You are pleasantly relaxed in
the cool of the tropical evening. After
your swim in the open-air pool your ap
petite has an edge that prompts you to
toy with the idea of dining on that local
delicacy, a crocodile steak. Although if
you have conventional tastes this luxury
hotel at Lae on the northwest coast of
Papua New Guinea can offer you a
wonderful a la carte selection of inter
national cuisine. But there's no rush to
decide.
Tomorrow you'll be visiting the local Bo
tanical Gardens, abounding in exotic
orchids, a sanctuary for rare birds and
animals. And in the days that follow there
will be a whole succession of heavenly
beauty spots to visit in this island para
dise in the Pacific.
You raise your glass and the final
touch that completes the euphoria of the
moment is the exquisite taste of a cool
beer on the tongue...
It's SP, a local beer, one of the two main
products of Papua New Guinea's South
Pacific Brewery. It's as good as any beer
you've drunk anywhere and that's not
really surprising. For both South Paci
fic's SP Lager and Anchor are brewed
under the technical direction of Heine-
ken.
It's vitally important of course, that first
beer of the evening, one of the accepted
normalities of life, wherever you may be.
But perhaps only a brewery man, or
someone at least connected with the
trade, can fully appreciate the tremen
dous feat of daily organisation that
provides it.
There are countless places throughout
the world where you can savour that
moment, that first sharp chill of a
delicious beer on the palate; but the
elegant service, the calm efficiency, the
casual amiability all are securely
though unobtrusively supported by the
smoothly running Heineken organisa
tion machine.
One important element in that machine
is the Planned Maintenance Department
of Heineken's technical company Hei
neken Technische Beheer BV, based at
Zoeterwoude. A few weeks ago you
might have seen evidence of it as you
lounged at the pool-side bar in Lae
though you wouldn't have realised it.
For the man sitting a few tables away
from you and, like you, enjoying his first
beer of the evening, might well have
been Mr. A. L. M. van Rijn from Zoeter
woude, a member of the department's
three-man team and responsible for ad
vising breweries in the Far East. (This
hard-working Zoeterwoude trio is com
pleted by Mr. J. Wesdorp, Department
Chief who looks after Africa, and Mr. C.
van der Molen, responsible for Europe
and the Caribbean.) Mr. Van Rijn is in
Lae to see how planned maintenance is
functioning in Papua New Guinea. In fact
he's reasonably sure that everything is
going smoothly, but he still has to check
from time to time. During the next few
days he will be visiting the South Pacific
breweries at Lae and Port Moresby and
will be having talks with Mr. John Wilson,
an expatriate Australian engineer
trained at Zoeterwoude who has intro
duced planned maintenance at Lae. By
the end of the year the operation will be
largely self-generating and Mr. Wilson
will move to Port Moresby to repeat the
process there.
But just what, you might ask Mr. Van
Rijn, is planned maintenance? It is, he
would tell you, maintenance manage
ment in all its aspects. And that means,
quite simply, delivery of a quality product
at minimum cost just like your beer
was served earlier! which in turn con
notes every single activity connected
with keeping buildings, plant and equip-
tionaux. Mais ne vous pressez pas pour
choisir.
Demain vous visiterez le jardin botani-
que local, regorgeant d'orchidées exoti-
ques, un sanctuaire pour les animaux et
les oiseaux rares. Et, les jours suivants,
vous pourrez visiter des sites divinement
beaux dans cette fie paradisiaque du
Pacifique.
tion.
II existe d'innombrables endroits, dans
le monde entier, oü vous pouvez savou-
rer eet instant, cette première sensation
de fraïcheur soudaine d'une bière déli-
cieuse sur votre palais, mais le service
de premier ordre, l'efficacité tranquille,
l'amabilité spontanée, tout cela repose,
solidement mais discrètement, sur les
rouages bien huilés de l'organisation
Heineken.
Un élément important de cette organi
sation est le département maintenance
planifiée de la filiale technique d'Heine
ken, la Heineken Technische Beheer
BV, située a Zoeterwoude. Voici quel-
