St. John The Baptist Saint Jean-Baptiste et andHeineken Heineken the Caribbean connection - deux noms associés aux Antilles mmmmtÊÊitèmmm*- Puerto Rico, probably the best known of the string of beautiful islands enclosing the Caribbean, has a distinguished history. Dis covered by Columbus in 1493, it was at first named after St. John the Baptist. Later the name changed to its present form, which means rich harbour. It was a quite logical change, for the island proved the only point of entry for shipping in the area. For Heineken, Puerto Rico, while not the only point of entry, is cer tainly a flourishing outlet. Turn over of Heineken beer there is substantial enough to require the services of a full-time represen tative, M. Michel Bernier, working closely with the company's agents, Mendez and Co. Inc. Mendez and Co. also imports a range of other goods, although Heineken is one of the main pil lars on which its success de pends. Breweries associated with Hei neken are dotted about that part of the world in Curasao, Suri nam, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Ja maica but the Heineken beer served in Puerto Rico comes straight from the company's breweries in Holland. Important customers are the lar ge tourist hotels. These are a considerable factor in the economy of the island, for tour ism makes a substantial con tribution to the gross national product. The 3425 square miles of land which make up Puerto Ri co attract an average of about one and a half million visitors a year. Most of them come from the USA and so are accustomed to drinking Heineken at home. This pleasant pursuit they can conti nue to indulge while spending their holidays in that remote part of their country, for Puerto Rico has US commonwealth status. To supply both tourists and Puerto Ricans with Heineken, Mendez and Co. has built its own warehouse and established its own transportation system. It has also initiated over the past ten years a number of promotions for increasing brand sales with the result that Heineken is firmly established as the leading imported European beer.
