new crew aboard may mean that the others,
probably well known to the rep, are on leave
for several months. This means starting all
over again.
Even so, it's not as frustrating as the laying up
of a ship known to be a good Heineken outlet.
A vessel may be idle because the world
economic situation has lessened demand for
its services. It may be undergoing a refit. Ei
ther way it's not going to need Heineken or any
other beer for perhaps a year, perhaps longer.
There is another side to the job, a re
sponsibility just as great as endeavouring to
ensure that the ship concerned is going to buy
Heineken products from the chandler ashore.
This is, simply news gathering. Business
news of course, news about what's happe
ning on the other side of the world. It may yield
information of interest to the Heineken com
mercial intelligence system, and essential to
the unit's aim to take an increasing share of
the ship beverage business worldwide.
The ship-chandlers' sector
If stimulating demand among ships' buyers is
front line action aboard, then that of promo
tion among ship-chandlers is an equally im
portant operation ashore.
A ship-chandler is a wholesaler in a big way of
business. He stocks a range of about 6,000
articles everything that's needed aboard a
ship. There are 40 of these specialist whole
salers distributed among Holland's major
ports. Those at Rotterdam have a fine inter
national reputation for the food they put on
board and for availability which means es
pecially comprehensive and substantial
stocks.
ser a terre. Les visiteurs sont done les bien-
venus.
ouverte. Le don des Hollandais pour les lan
gues est considérable et les hommes appelés
a travailler sur les quais sont véritablement
polyglottes. A l'occasion, lorsqu'ils montent a
