LA NOUVELLE CALEDONIE
NEW CALEDONIA
xième Guerre Mondiale, devenait Territoire d'Outre-
Grace a
New Caledonia, together with its Dependencies, forms
a group of islands in the South West of the Pacific
Ocean, some 2.000 kilometres to the East of Sydney.
Commonly called Grande Terre' (Mainland), the
island of New Caledonia itself is about 400 kilometres
long and 50 kilometres wide.
Protected by the world's largest coral reef, New
Caledonia offers a strikingly beautiful panorama of
deep forest and green reed-covered hills, set against
a contrasting background of bare mountains, which
are in fact loaded with minerals.
The population consists of a tremendous assortment
of peoples and races. The island group has a total
population of 100.000, comprising 47.000 Melanesians,
38.000 of European origin, and the remaining 15.000
almost equal numbers of Tahitans, Indonesians and
Vietnamese.
Nearly 60 of the total population resides in the
capital city, Nouméa.
Discovered in 1768 by the French navigator Bougain
ville, New Caledonia was given its name by the well-
known English Captain Cook, who landed there in
1774. A French colony since 1853, New Caledonia,
which during the 2nd World War bravely fought on
the Allies side, became a French Overseas Territory
in 1946. It is administered by a High Commissioner
and a Government residing in Nouméa, the capital.
Mainstays of New Caledonia's booming prosperity
are mining, fishing, forestry and agriculture.
It is classed as the world's third largest producer of
nickel, after Canada and the U.S.S.R., the total amount
mined in 1970 being 450.000 tons. The planning is that
this figure will be doubled within the next four years.
Thanks to this huge nickel industry, New Caledonia
has achieved quite a high standard of living in a
very short time. The average salary amounts to about
U.S. 800.per month, making the economical
position of the island unique.
You must be wondering what all this has to do with
Heineken and the answer is that Heineken's
position on the island is unique too. Thanks to
Heineken agent RABOT and a team of enthusiastic
importers, our sales have increased from 10.000 car
tons in 1965 to many, many hundreds of thousands of
cartons in 1970. In fact, the Heineken consumption
per person is higher than in Holland itself! It is by far
our biggest market in the Pacific. For this reason, we
would like to say to everyone who has contributed to
this success: Congratulations and Thank You!
