Foreword LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY L, LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY V LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY LIVING OUR RESPONSIBILITY Heineken is an integral part of society. Our employees work every day to maximise the positive contribution we make to the societies in which we operate and minimise potentially adverse effects of our activities. In this casebook we focus on some of the ways Heineken employees around the world express that responsibility in addressing a wide array of issues, from promoting responsible alcohol use to environment protection and from community involvement to training and education. Reading these cases, which reflect the true spirit of our employees, will take you on a journey that crosses all continents. The cases we have chosen are just a few examples, showing some of the best we have to offer. Where possible, we have included in each report the relevant information on Heineken's performance worldwide, as published in our 2002-2003 Sustainability Report. While we are proud of our achievements as a global brewing company, we are fully aware of the need to constantly improve our financial, environmental and social performance. We also accept that we shall make mistakes in working towards our goals: we are a learning company which is determined to achieve greater sustainability. This year, for the first time, we have published a full sustainability report for the years 2002 and 2003, called 'Towards sustain ability'. As the title implies, we are on a journey, a journey with a clear direction but an ever-changing destination. I hope that you, whether as a Heineken employee or in another capacity, will join us on our journey and draw inspiration from these of most asset: the people who make Heineken! THONY RUYS Chairman of the Executive Board, Heineken N.V.
