Environmental performance
Last year several mutations have taken place. Several acquisitions have been incorpo
rated in the environmental reporting system: the Affligem Brewery in Belgium, the
breweries of Martin and Gemer in Slovakia, as well as the breweries of Cruz Campo in
Spain (Arano, Jaen, Madrid, Sevilla and Valencia). The breweries of Gemer and Sevilla
also have a malting on-site. With this the number of reporting units in 2000 has
increased from 42 to 50.
Production
In 2000 56.7 million hi of beer have been produced, which is about 14% more than in
iggg. Also the amount of produced malt has increased largely: from 294,000 ton in
1999 to 431,000 ton in 2000. This increase of 47% is a result of the production of the
newly acquired maltings and an extension of Albert maltings in Belgium. The pro
duced volume of softdrinks has remained unchanged at 4.6 million hi.
Water
The specific water consumption of the breweries has decreased from 6.0 to 5.7 hl/hl
(target 2000: 5.8hl/hl). At different locations water savings have been obtained, for
example in Stara Zagorka (Bulgaria) where the specific water consumption has
decreased with 24%. The awareness with respect to the water use has grown as a
result of the installation of water meters and training. The specific water consumption
of the maltings has remained constant at 5.6 m3/ton (target 6.0 m3/ton). For soft-
drink production plants the specific water consumption has increased slightly from
3.0 to 3.2 hl/hl (target 2.8 hl/hl). Except for softdrinks the targets have been reached.
Electricity
For breweries and softdrink production plants the specific electricity consumption
has overall remained stable at 10.2 and 3.7 kWh/hl respectively (targets 2000:10 kWh
for breweries and 3.7 kWh/hl for softdrink production plants). For maltings the con
sumption has increased with 13% fromii3 to 128 kWh/ton (target 2000: 119 kWh/hl).
This is the result of a slightly increased consumption at the already owned maltings,
and the contribution of the newly acquired malting in Sevilla (Spain), which has a high
electricity consumption.
Thermal energy
The specific thermal energy consumption (natural gas, fuel oil) of the breweries has
decreased from 121 to 118 MJ/hl (target 2000: 117 MJ/hl). For softdrink production
