Other emissions to air involve ammonia (NH3HCFC's and halons. We use ammonia as
a coolant, whilst HCFC's are generally used for the liquefaction of carbon dioxide and
for air-conditioning units. Halons are used in fire-extinguishing equipment.
Our production facilities make use of a total of 483 tonnes of ammonia, of
which the majority (471 tonnes) is in use at the breweries. This ammonia is stored in
appropriately safeguarded storage tanks. Emissions occur as a result of leaks, or
during maintenance of and repairs to the systems. The risk of the occurrence of
ammonia leakages is largely dependent on the type of refrigeration system, in 1999 -
based on estimates - about 12 percent (60.2 tonnes) of the ammonia was released
into the air, in comparison with 17 percent (80.3 tonnes) in 1998. The reduction in the
emission of ammonia was largely due to improvements in the cooling systems.
