MALT DUST MAY BE FORMED IN MALT SILOS. LIMITING THE AMOUNT OF MALT DUST IS BENEFICIAL FROM BOTH AN ECOLOGICAL AND AN OPERATION AL POINT OF VIEW. EXTENSIVE MEASURES HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED TO LIMIT THE ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES OF MALT DUST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. COSTS AND BENEFITS OFTHE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT The costs and benefits associated with the environment can be classified under a very wide range of categories and concern various management levels within the Company. Environmental expen diture is comprised of the costs incurred as the direct result of the endeavours to improve the level of environmental care and of the measures implemented so as to provide for compliance with the relevant legislation and regu lations. This expenditure also includes costs incurred as a result of levies on emissions to air or to water, the operation and mainten ance of Heineken's wastewater treatment installations, the employment and wages of environ mental managers and engineers and the fees involved in calling in third parties. Heineken also receives income from its environmental manage ment activities. This income is derived from activities such as the sales of by-products and re- useable waste (inclusive of used packaging material), as well as the reduced costs for energy and water achieved as a result of the imple mentation of the various measures. We intend to provide a more detail ed summary of the entire Com pany's environmental expenditure and in-come in the next Environ ment Report. HEINEKEN ENVIRONMENT REPORT 1998-1999 18
