priorities, objectives and the current status of the implementation of the environ
mental management system. In combination with the BCS these internal environmen
tal reports constitute the basis for the assessment of the progress achieved within the
entire Heineken Company.
3.5.5 The Management Reviews
The internal environmental report and the realisation of the operational plan are
used to follow each operating company's progress in its environmental policy. They
also serve to indicate the areas in which further improvements are required. Action is
taken in the event that progress falls behind the scheduling, as indicated in the plan.
3.6 The implementation of environmental management systems
at the European operating companies
All European operating companies must operate their production processes in accor
dance with the international ISO 9000 standards and to have in place an environmen
tal management system, preferably ISO 14001. Two Dutch breweries (Zoeterwoude
and Den Bosch) were awarded this certificate in 1998. The three breweries and the
mineralwater factory in Greece received ISO 14001 certification in July 1999.
As a result 35% of the volume of Heineken's European beer and 11% of the mineral
