Heineken takes over
soft drinks business
in Zaïre
With a dinner for all duty free customers (photo above), a
dinner and show for the management of Malayan Breweries
Ltd. and a weekend outing for the entire staff plus their
families (photo below), the Heineken export office in Singa
pore had great fun celebrating its tenth birthday party a few
months ago.
The new bottling line at the soft drinks plant
in Medan, Indonesia, is ready. Two months
ago the bottling line was officially opened by
the Governor of North Sumatra, Mr. Raja
Inal Siregar. The official start-up was
attended by some three hundred guests.
Four times a year the management and the supervisory directors of Bralirwa get together for
a board meeting in Rwanda. Last quarter that meeting was held in the brewery in Gisenyi.
This brewery produces Primus, Miitzig and Guinness.
But the meeting was more than just a board conference. The gentlemen also took time out
to look round the brewery. Pictured, left to right: Mr. E. Wits (Heineken, Amsterdam), Mr.
M. Boreel (general manager of Bralirwa), in the background Mr. Lebru (general manager
Brarudi in Burundi) and the Bralirwa chairman, P. Rwakayigamba, and far right, production
manager F. Mbagirente.

of Coca Cola to Mr. Tanri Abeng.
At the end of last year Heine-
ken Internationaal Beheer took
over the soft drinks business
C.I.B. (Compagnie Industrielle
de Boisson) in Zaïre. C.I.B.
mainly has international brands
like Coca Cola and Fanta Orange
in its product range. It also produ
ces its own brands of grenadine
and tonic.
Compagnie Industrielle de
Boisson achieves an annual sales
volume of 600,000 hectolitres via
four establishments: in Boma,
Matadi, Kinshasa and Lumum-
bashi. The business employs 800
people and is by far the biggest
soft drinks company in Zaïre.
C.I.B. will continue to operate
with complete autonomy under
the same management and will
remain independent of Heine-
ken's other trade investments and
interests in Zaïre.
For many years Heineken has
had a stake of some 70% in Brali-
ma. Soft drinks form a separate
division of this brewery company.
Vital'O is Bralima's foremost soft
drinks brand.
They included Mr. Tanri Abeng, Chairman of PT
Multi Bintang, Mr. J.J.C. Cronin, coordinating direc
tor Heineken, Mr. Andrew Angle, manager south east
region for Coca Cola International, and the general
manager of PT Coca Cola Indonesia, Mr. Peter Herd.
After speeches by Mr. Angle, Mr. Abeng and the
Governor, the latter performed the official opening
ceremony by pressing a button which opened the
doors to the bottling hall.
During this ceremony PT Multi Bintang's technical
director, Mr. F.G.R. Lefebvre, handed over the mil
lionth crate to Mr. Abeng. It was the first time in the
history of the Medan plant that over one million crates
of Coca Cola soft drinks had been produced within
one year.
