Preparations nearly complete:
The hydrofoil disguised as a Heineken bottle (see our re
port in the December issue of Heineken International
Magazine) was recently launched. Adventurer Fons Oerle-
mans plans to use it this year to make the crossing of 5,500
kilometres from the United States to Europe.

1969 building and contains
45 rooms.

After setting sail from the port
of New York the hydrofoil, chris
tened the 'Spirit of Heineken",
should take three days to arrive at
the Scilly Isles off the South coast
of England. If the crossing suc
ceeds, Oerlemans will im
mediately become the holder of
two records: the first ocean cross
ing by hydrofoil and the long-dis
tance record for hydrofoil craft.
Initiative-takers Fons Oerle
mans and Kee Arens have spent
many years working on this pro
ject. The result of their efforts is a
hydrofoil in the form of a Heine
ken beer bottle. Twelve metres
long, the craft has a cross-section
of 2.20 metres, weighs almost ten
tons and has a wingspan of 8.50
metres. Its 1,000 h.p. engine gen
erates a cruising speed of some 80
kilometres an hour.
Fons Oerlemans has already
started the trials for seaworthiness.
First in the Amsterdam dockland
area, then on the North Sea and fi
nally out in the Atlantic. On 18
May the 'Spirit of Heineken' will
be loaded on a ship bound for New
York. On 30 May the ship is due to
dock in Port Elisabeth, after which
the 'Spirit of Heineken' will be
readied for action. The only wait
then will be for favourable weather
conditions.
The Dutch firm of General
Cosmetics has launched a range
of skin care products under the
Sourcy name. This brand of
mineral water is owned by Vru-
mona, which gave General Cos
metics permission to use the
name for its cosmetic products.
The basis of the Sourcy skin care
range is water taken from the
same source as that used for 'our
own' Sourcy mineral water.
The quality project in the Dre-
her brewery in Popoli is being
continued. The first report by
consultancy bureau Galgano,
which is monitoring the project,
formed sufficient reason for the
Dreher management to keep the
project going. The aim of the
project is that various working
parties will draw up a list of re
commendations to improve the
quality of work.
The low-alcohol beer Buckler
is doing well. To extend the
range in the Netherlands Buckler
has recently also been made
available in cans. In Spain and
France canned Buckler has al
ready been on the market for a
while now.
Since the middle of March the
Heineken brewery in Zoeter-
woude has had a new telephone
number. The new number is 31-
71-456111. Under this number it
is possible to reach both Heine
ken Nederlands Beheer B.V. and
Heineken Technisch Beheer B.V.
The new system also allows di
rect extension dialling. The ex
tension numbers which previ
ously began with a 4 now have a
6 as their first digit. The exten
sion numbers which started with
5 now begin with a 7.
In mid-August a big new golf
tournament will be held in the
United Kingdom, sponsored by
Whitbread, the distributor of
Murphy's Irish Stout in the U.K.
The match will be played for the
Murphy's Cup and the total prize
money is 160,000 pounds.
Agreement has been reached in
principle with the tournament
organisers that the tournament
will be sponsored by Whitbread
for the next three years.
Murphy's Irish Stout is enjoy
ing great success on the British
market. Thanks to such ac
tivities as sponsoring, the de
mand for this product has in
creased sharply. So sharply, in
fact, that the capacity of the bre
wery was not sufficient and a
Whitbread brewery in Wales has
meanwhile taken over a part of
the production of Murphy's
Stout.
The building activities were de
layed somewhat by unsuspected
obstacles in the soil. During initial
excavation work it was found that
a wall two metres wide and five
metres deep ran right across the
entire building site. The demoli
tion of the old building also took
longer than originally thought.
The commissioning of the new
block does not mean an end to the
building work. The existing office
premises, including the former
