This photo of the consular team, taken during the Christmas period, shows (from left
to right): Mrs. C.J.M. de Voogd, Mrs. P. Sibon (deputy chancellor), Mrs. A.M.
Stoffel, Mr. A. de Voogd and Mr. J. Stoffel (chancellor).
On the Bahamas, a group of
islands in the north of the
Caribbean Sea, a start was
made on the construction of the
Commonwealth Brewery in
September 1985The brewery is j ointly
owned by a group of international and
local partners. Heine ken has a 48%
interest in this brewery. Once the
brewery is completed, it will have a
capacity of95,000 hectolitresProducts
to be brewed there will include
Heineken lager and a local beer brand
Being the biggest partner, Heineken
will provide the management.
HeinekenTechnical Services (HTB) in
Zoeterwoude (Holland) designed the
brewery. It is expected that the first
bottles will come off the bottling lines
during the course of this year.
The Consulate of the
Netherlands in Strasbourg
(France), which had been
located on the site of the Schiltigheim
brewery since 31 March 1982, closed its
doors on 15 January 1986. Because of
his new work Mr. Albert de Voogd was
forced to resign his post as Honorary
Consul. He has been succeeded by Mr.
J. Figier, who is of French nationality
and is the local managing director of
the Banque de Neuflize Schlumberger
et Mallet, a bank which is affiliated to
the Algemene Bank Nederland.
To mark his transfer a small farewell
reception was held, at which the guests
included diplomats from the
Permanent Representation of the
Netherlands at the Council of Europe,
Dutch officials from the Council of
Europe, the committee of the Dutch
Club for Strasbourg and surroundings,
as well as other prominent Dutch
nationals. Especially for this occasion,
the brewery's chef cook had laid on the
traditional Dutch "bitterballen"
(deepfried cocktail meat balls)whilst
HTB staff had brought along that
familiar Dutch delicacy - raw herrings.
Both these speciality snacks soon
found welcome takers among the
Dutch guests.
The Prime Minister of the Bahamas,
together with the international and local
partners, gives the signal to start the
building of the new brewery.
On the photo you can see the
interior of the bar of the Hotel
Nacional in Moscow. This bar
was specially designed for this Russian
hotel by the Heineken Civil
Engineering Bureau at the end of 1984.
It has proved to be a success. At the
request of the Soviet State Bureau for
Tourism, Heineken has now designed
various interiors in the characteristic
Heineken style. The bars will be
installed in a number of big
international hotels spread throughout
the entire Soviet Union. Incidentally,
not only the interior design is by
Heineken. The beer dispensed in the
bars is Heineken lager. Tourists and
business travellers staying in these
hotels can therefore quench their thirst
with the only beer that is available on
draught in Russia. The soft drinks are
supplied by Vrumona and the spirits
come from the Spirits Wine Group-
Holland. Except, of course, for the
vodka. After all, that's a Russian
speciality!
For the first
time in its
history
Amstel in Holland
sold more than one
million hectolitres of
bottled beer over a
12- month period.
As a result, Amstel
has strengthened
its position as the
country's second-
biggest A' brand.
Heineken beer is
Holland's leading 'A'
brand. Amstel placed
a special advertise
ment in the trade press
to commemorate this
milestone. The caption
reads "The summer
might have been a
wash-out, but it was
alright for our taste.
Recently the Dutch
Ambassadors and Chargés
d'Affaires in Africa paid a visit
to our brewery in Zoeterwoude
(Holland). All Dutch Ambassadors
return to the Netherlands once each
year for talks at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs. Under the auspices of the
Africa Institute, a trip round the
brewery had been organised for them.
The Africa Institute is a meeting place
for industry, various organisations and
government representatives.
Heineken is an active member if this
Institute. On behalf of Heineken there
were many people present who are
involved in our activities in Africa. Mr.
Coebergh, Executive Board member
responsible for that Continent, acted
as host at this meeting of diplomats.
