Junior soccer:
Holland versus Italy

Issue No. 4 of Heineken
International Magazine contained
a highly original invitation: "Who'd
like to come to Italy with a junior
soccer team (ages 9,10 and 11 years
old) and play some matches? Either an
existing team or a newly formed one."
The invitation came from Dutchman
Klaas Blaauw, who works for Dreher
(Italy). Many must have been tempted
to respond, but the one who actually
put pen to paper was Aad van der
Meer. Aad works for the repair and
maintenance service in Zoeterwoude
(Holland) and for many years he has
been an active member of the
Alkmania football club in Oude
Wetering. His initiative met with an
enthusiastic reception from the junior
members of his club and, fortunately,
from their parents as wellThat's how it
came that 24 budding soccer superstars
and their five adult escorts set out by
coach for Italy to take up the challenge
For eight of the youngsters it was their
very first trip outside Holland. And
only one of the lads had been to Italy
before.
Unfortunately, the Italian boys do not
have any school holidays in the
autumn. So the matches had to be
played in the evening. The language
barrier proved to be absolutely no
obstacle. The shared passion for the
game of soccer soon brought the
different nationalities closer together.
The matches, too, were played in the
best possible spiritA total of six teams
took part in the tournament. Alkmania
II only made it to the play-off for 5th
and 6th placebut the Alkmania I team
made sure that the trip was a success.
They beat the Italian team Mezzate in
a final attended by some 500
spectators, including such high
dignitaries as the Mayor of Mezzate
and a official of the Italian Football
Federation. For the boys it was an
unforgettable trip. Thanks to Klaas
Blaauw, and also thanks to Mr.
Luciano at Dreher who is chairman of
Mezzate F.C. This spring the Italian
juniors will be playing a return visit to
Holland.

Here they are: the budding talents of Alkmania I and Alkmania II during their first
'international' against Italy.

whilst the new brewhouse was
completed at the end of last year. All of
this was needed to ensure that the
brewery could continue brewing a
good beer of constant quality. And
that's certainly the case today. In the
new brewhouse Heineken lager and
Murphy stout are produced.
Hie opening was accompanied by a
festive celebration. After the
customary religious dedication,
Ireland's Prime Minister, Dr. G.
FitzgeraldT.D., symbolically started
up brewing operations by pressing a
button. About a hundred guests
attended the ceremony. Those
representing Heineken head office
included Messrs. Van Schaik (Vice-
Chairman of the Board)Drost
(Exports Director) and Van Eerde
(Research Development Director).
By train and bus the guests then moved
on to Fota House (an Irish country
house built in 1820) where they had
lunch. At the end of the afternoon a
meeting with Murphy's personnel was
held at 'The Kiln', the brewery's own
reception building.
Murphy's is now ready for what the
future may bring. As Mr. Van Soest,
general manager, said in his speech:
"At Murphy's we have a clear target,
maintaining the constant quality of our
products. Millions of pounds have
been invested to make that possible.
We are fortunate that we have a good
team of people who are skilled and
conscientious and we firmly believe
that our quality-consciousness will
bring us a growing market share. We'll
keep you informed about further
developments at Murphy's.
As part of last year's celebrations
of the 800th anniversary of the
City of Cork (where our Irish
brewery is located), a major art
exhibition was staged in Holland.
Artists from Cork and surrounding
areas were asked to submit their work
for this art show. In cooperation with
Murphy's Brewery, a number of these
works of art were selected for display in
the Heineken Gallery, an exhibition
room alongside the brewery in
Amsterdam. A pleasant feature was
that this art exhibition coincided with
the Gallery's 20th anniversary in 1985.
The Irish Ambassador in the
Netherlands, Mr. K.W. Heaslip,
opened the exhibition. To mark this
official opening the whole reception
area was decked out in Irish style and
guests were able to sample the taste of
Murphy's Stout. One of the artists had
come over to Holland at Murphy's
invitation to be present at the official
opening.

Vrumona,
Heineken's soft
drinks business in
Holland, is
launching a new
light-alcoholic drink
on the Dutch market: the "Twister".
The drink is based on white wine,
fruit juice and carbonated water.
In America this type of drink is known
as a "wine-cooler". Since their
introduction in 1981, wine-coolers have
proved a phenomenal succes in the
United States. "Twister" is a wine-
cooler specially developed for the
Dutch market. Besides this, it is the
first drink of its kind to be produced in
Holland. "Twister" is an outstanding
thirst-quencher which tastes best if
chilled before drinking. At the
'Horecava", a trade fair for the hotels,
restaurants and catering trade held
each year in Amsterdam, visitors were
able to have their first taste of this new
drink. Deliveries will start in the spring
of 1986.

Heineken's Spirits and Wine
Group - Holland (Gedistilleerd
en Wijngroep Nederland B.V. - GWN)
has become the exclusive importer of
Bacardi Rum for the Dutch market.
Acquisition of the Bacardi
distributorship fits in with the policy of
the Spirits and Wine Group which is
aimed at marketing a select range of
imported leading international brands
alongside the top Dutch products it
already sells.
In 1862 Don Facundo Bacardi started
distilling Bacardi Rum in Santiago (on
the island of Cuba). Today, Bacardi's
sales of more than 20 million cases a year
make it the biggest-selling spirits brand in
the world.
In Holland, just as in most other markets
throughout the world, Bacardi is the
leading brand of imported rum.
